Out of Classroom Experience – Gary Patti
We finished up another great week at Parisi Prep, capping it off with an incredibly inspirational talk from Mr. Gary Patti. Mr. Patti was born with a rare bone disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease. Mr. Patti has been confined to a wheelchair since childhood. He broke his first bone at 2 weeks old and has since broken over 100 bones in his body. The student-athletes were blessed to hear Mr. Patti discuss his life experiences and how to respond to adversity, in their social lives, on the field, and in the classroom.
This week in Language Arts the students learned about the last step of the essay writing process – adding transitions to make sure their writing flows! The boys used this new knowledge to start work on their 2nd and 3rd body paragraphs for their persuasive essays. Students also worked on their critical reading skills by analyzing an article debating whether or not fighting should be banned from professional hockey, in addition to reading more chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird. Great discussions took place for both subjects, In the coming weeks, students will finish up their persuasive essays and finish their novel study.
Science & Healthy Living
Students continued to discuss individualized nutritional requirements based on the sports they play. Students also expanded on their knowledge of anaerobic vs. aerobic exercise and the different fuel needs based on the style of respiration. The students understand it is very important to give the body the right ingredients for fuel so that they can perform and at a high level.
This week students continued to progress through Code.org and Vidcode, depending on their choice. Students are building upon their existing knowledge of programming concepts such as sequence, functions, function arguments, and properties.
This week in Personal Development was the 2nd class in the mini-series of Building Your Own Personal Brand. Several of the student-athletes presented their assignments on one of the three people they researched and built a personal brand, as a means to understanding personal brand content. Student-athlete received their assignment for next week, where they will build their own personal brand in preparation for a fictitious scenario of presenting themselves to a group of recruiting coaches.
